The Abbott Leadership Institute (ALI) is a division of the Department of Urban Education at Rutgers University, Newark. As such it enjoys University status and is noted for its information based approach to parent engagement in partnership with education professionals in bringing urban school reform.

Since its inception 9 years ago, ALI has taught 500 individuals the art and science of engaging parents as participants in their children’s education in free classes at Rutgers University Newark. This year alone another 1162 people were reached at churches, conferences and other special events where Engagement in schools and education policy and practices is the watchword of the event.

Included in the classes and other events are parents, grandparents, community advocates, Rutgers college students (undergraduates and student teachers), Montclair State college students (student teachers), local middle and high school students, School Board members, teachers, school administrators, union representatives, and incarcerated youth.
